Michael, a brilliant structural engineer, aided in designing Fox River Penitentiary. Desperate and out of options, he stages a bank robbery, pleads guilty, and gets himself sent to the same prison. Hidden on his body are elaborate tattoos that conceal the blueprints of the prison and the necessary escape routes. The goal? To break Lincoln out before his execution in the electric chair.

He systematically recruits Sucre, T-Bag, Abruzzi, Tweener, a old inmate named Charles Westmoreland (who may actually be the legendary hijacker D.B. Cooper), and a convict named C-Note (Rockmond Dunbar). The famous "escape team" is now assembled.

He meets his cellmate Fernando Sucre, the ruthless Warden Henry Pope, prison doctor Sara Tancredi, and his brother Lincoln. Michael reveals the tattoo to a stunned Lincoln, uttering the iconic line: "I'm breaking you out." Episode 2: "Allen"
The team discovers they need a new route. They must dig through the guard's break room, which is currently in use. They need "PUGNAc" (insulin blockers) to keep Michael’s fake diabetes symptoms convincing. C-Note joins the team.

Michael must synthesize a chemical compound, using the mnemonic "Cute Poison" (copper sulfate and phosphoric acid), to secretly corrode a sewage pipe beneath the infirmary. To do this, he needs Haywire out of his cell. Michael orchestrates Haywire's removal by staging a self-inflicted injury, which brings a relieved Sucre back into the fold.
