The movie takes place in 1973 Los Angeles. A social worker, Anna Harris (Shannyn Sossamon), begins to suspect that a malevolent entity is terrorizing a family. As the events escalate, Anna discovers that the entity is La Llorona, a vengeful spirit who drowned her own children in a river and now seeks to claim the souls of others.
Tragedy strikes almost immediately when the two boys are found drowned in a local river. Patricia blames Anna for their deaths, revealing that she prayed to La Llorona to take Anna’s children in exchange for her own. Soon, Anna's children, Chris and Samantha, begin seeing the weeping spirit in white, bearing mysterious burn marks on their arms. To save her family from a predatory entity that will stop at nothing to drown her children, Anna must enlist the help of Rafael Olvera (Raymond Cruz), a former priest turned disillusioned shaman who utilizes unorthodox spiritual remedies.
